The American vacation

This was our second trip to the US.Four years ago, we travelled to the west coast to California. This time it was to the east coast to Washington. The nature of our visit was to assist our son and daughter in law who  just had a baby girl.Several months of planning, organizing, shopping, packing and attending to odd jobs till the last minute, were carried out in joyful anticipation of the days to come.
After sweating it out in Chennai airport, Frankfurt was the perfect haven to relax a full three hours, before boarding the onward flight to our destination. We were awed by the vast expanse of the airport, the long convenient walkalators, the huge lounges and the friendly Germans!   Dulles airport welcomed us with cool winds  and pleasant weather.
Herndon- a suburb in the Virginia-Washington border is a beautiful place. This was a much needed vacation for us  and we spent our time mostly in the company of our new grandchild. She was just about three weeks when we arrived and the next few months were spent observing her day to day progress.Truly the most rewarding in life, spending time with your grandchild!
We are regular walkers and it was a pleasure to walk there.Who would like to miss the opportunity of walking in clean, pollution free atmosphere with side walks unlike the crowded, footpath deprived and potholed roads of Chennai? We walked miles and miles, adding layers to our winter clothing in accordance to the day's temperature. We would venture out any time of the day on our walking spree, be it 5 degrees or -2 degrees C  .We just loved it.
The flurries and the snow fall excited us. It was the first time we were experiencing the snow fall.I used to wonder at the absence of lightning and thunder when it rained! Not much sight-seeing this time, but the Great falls near the capital is surely a must watch place. It is an astounding view of the Potomac river falling with great force and speed over steep rocks and flowing through a narrow gorge. It is a picnic spot and tourists throng the place.we visited quite a few museums which were too huge and each required many hours to completely go through them.
Avid readers, both of us were exhilarated by the splendid library, so neat and orderly.Finding books with large print for the seniors amazed us .We read a lot of books and ofcourse watched  many quality movies and documentaries on Netflix which was a treat.Going to Giant,Shoppers and the Indian store was a satisfying chore..And in between all these activities I did not forget to cook!
Our three week vacation squeezed in between to Canada was a bonanza. But overall the thrill of watching our grand child as she pushed five months was pure bliss. We do miss her back in Chennai.Living in harmony with our son, daughter in law and grand child is a blessing and a joy for ever. This was a very pleasant trip for both of us and we lived every moment of it.
